A comfortable work shoe that was once worn by Mediterranean day laborers is making its way down fashion runways and onto the shelves of high-end retail stores.

It’s the espadrille—a popular sandal adding height to women’s appearance without sacrificing the comfort usually associated with stilettos and other heeled shoes.
Espadrilles add versatility to the closets of fashion-conscious shoeholics while making casual summer outfits chic and flirtatious.
Fashion Trendy
After being absent from retail shelves for many summer seasons, espadrilles made a fashion comeback last summer, accompanying peasant tops, full skirts, hobo bags and turquoise jewelry.
This summer will be no different as women are pairing flat espadrilles with jeans (of course!), knee length skirts, shorts and cropped pants. Wedge-heeled espadrilles are sure to look great
with casual dresses, skirts and of course, jeans.
Origin of the Sole
Originating in the South of France in the 17th Century, espadrilles were made by day laborers and poor people who could easily make the comfortable shoes in their homes. Traditionally made
of canvas or cotton fabrics, the soles were made of rope or were molded with a rubber material to give it such an appearance. Laces were not for fashion—but to hold the shoe securely in its place.
Today’s espadrille has evolved. Espadrilles can be flat and flexible or with a platform or wedge heel. And the laces that were once to hold the shoe in place are indeed quite fashionable—with straps that
wrap seductively around the leg or buckle at the ankle.
